Pioneers of the Inevitable, POTI, maker of the once popular open source media player Songbird, has announced on the Songbird blog that, due to financial reasons, as of June 28, 2013 all of Songbird’s operations and associated services will be discontinued.
Songbird started of in early 2006 as a cross-platform browser-like music player with the iTunes look, maybe not the feel. In 2010, Songbird decided to drop Linux support sending out widespread anger from the very supportive Linux community
Songbird currently runs on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Android and the iOS.
While thanking the developers, investors, partners and users of Songbird for their massive collaboration, on the Songbird blog, lead developer Eric Wittman openly recommends the Songbird-based desktop player Nightingale. Songbird it is licensed under the GPLv2. Source code is available from the Songbird download page.
